What isn’t included
Hosted cloud storage
There is no Snappyshot cloud to pay for. You bring a bucket, or you use the local share server and bring nothing.
A support contract
Issues and discussions live on GitHub. It's a fast way to get a fix and a slow way to get a phone call.
A notarised installer
You build it in Xcode with your own signing team. That's the trade for not having a paid developer account behind it.
What sharing actually costs you
This is the part every capture subscription bundles into a monthly fee. Priced directly, it's usually cheaper than the coffee you drink while uploading.

Storage rates are published list prices for standard storage and are rounded; they change, and requests or egress may be billed separately depending on the host. Treat this as an order-of-magnitude estimate, not a quote. Subscription figure is a typical per-seat price for a commercial capture app with hosted sharing.
Questions worth answering upfront
What do I need to run Snappyshot?
A Mac running macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and Xcode to build it. Open Snappyshot.xcodeproj, pick a signing team, and press Run. The app appears in the menu bar.
Which permissions does it ask for?
Screen Recording is required to capture anything. Camera, Microphone, and Accessibility are only requested if you turn on the camera bubble, mic recording, or keystroke display.
Do I have to set up cloud storage?
No. Without storage configured, sharing falls back to a built-in server: the link points at your Mac's address on the local network, so it works for anyone on the same Wi-Fi while Snappyshot is running. Everything else works with no network at all.
Which storage providers work?
Anything that speaks the S3 API — Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, DigitalOcean Spaces, MinIO — or point Snappyshot at your own upload endpoint and tell it which JSON key holds the returned link.
How do I know my storage settings are right?
Settings has a Test connection button that uploads and deletes a small file, so a bad key or a wrong region shows up in Settings instead of halfway through a share.
Can links expire?
Yes. Choose signed links and set an expiry, and the URL stops working when it lapses. Local share links support an expiry and an optional password too.
Is my recording quality really Retina?
On the High and Lossless presets, yes — the recorder captures the display's native pixel grid and encodes with HEVC. Trimming uses original-quality passthrough by default so it won't quietly re-encode that work.
Is there a Windows version?
No. Snappyshot is built on SwiftUI and ScreenCaptureKit, which are macOS-only frameworks.
